Abrasion - wearing away of material in small shreds
Abrasion resistance - that property of a surface by which it resists abrasion
Abrasive - a substance, such as steel grit, steel shot metallic garnet
Absorption - the process of soaking up, or assimilation
Activator - a catalyst or curing agent
Adsorption - the process of attraction to a surface

B

Blast cleaning, blasting - a method of surface preparation using abrasive
Blistering - the formation of bubbles in a cured, or nearly cured surface
Bubbling - bubbles appearing on the surface while coating is drying

Calibration - to determine the indication of output of a measuring instrument
Catalyst - accelerator, curing agent
Certification - confirmation by document under hand or seal as to the competence of a worker
CFM - cubic feet minute
Chemical pretreatment - use of chemicals to prepare a surface
Coating applicator - one who applies a protective or decorative coating
Coating system - a multi component polymeric protective film
Competent person - capable of identifying hazards, and take corrective measures to eliminate them
Compatible - suitable to combine with other substances
Containment Systems - hazardous removal enclosure, designed to prevent emissions to the environment
Contaminant - a foreign substance, inadvertently added to a coating
Corrosion - the deterioration of material, usually metal

Decontaminant - to remove reactive nuclides
Dehumidify - to reduce, by any process, the quantity of water within the immediate atmosphere
Deviation - completed work that is not in accordance with the specifications
Dew point - temperature at which moisture condenses
Disposal facility - specifically for the placement of hazardous waste
Dry film thickness - (DFT) thickness of applied coating when dried

E

Emission - materials released into the air, water or ground
Environment - the sum of all external conditions
Entry/exit airlock - enclosure placed at the entrance of a containment for workers to remove contaminated clothing
EPA - the environmental protection authority
Epoxy resins - film formers usually made from bisphenol
Etch - roughening of a surface by chemical means
Film thickness - thickness of coating above substrate
Flaking - (scaling) the detachment of small pieces of the coatings
Fumes - vapors, gasses or particles suspended in a vapor or gas

G

Generic type - a particular family of coatings
Galvanised - coated with zinc

Hardener - curing agent
Hazardous waste - paint debris that contains any substance above the limits set by the EPA pollution guidelines
Hold point - the point at which work must be stopped until inspected
Holiday - discontinuity, pinhole or void in a coating film

I

Induction time - time required for the chemically cured coatings
Inorganic - containing no carbon atoms
Irradiation - radiation exposure

L

Leachate - the amount of specific substance carried off or dissolved out of a material
Lead - a basic chemical element that can be combined with various other substances to form lead compounds
µg/m©¯ -micrograms per cubic metre of air, common units for reporting airborne concentrations of lead

M

Mixing ratio - expressed by weight or volume, ratio
Metallising - mechanical deposition of one metal on other
Mud cracking - irregular cracking that occurs as coatings dry

Nonconformance - documentation, deficiency in categorising conforming issues

Overspray - sprayed paint on adjacent surfaces
Oil and moisture traps - attached to air lines to extract oil and moisture

P

Peeling - separation of one or more layers of a coting
pH - the measure of acidity or alkalinity of a coating
Primer - the first coat of a coating system
Protective Coative - an adherent thin polymeric film applied to protect a surface
Profile - the surface roughness resulting from the surface preparation

Q

Quality Control - administration and engineering procedures
Quality Assurance - the verification of the conformance of the applicator

Radiation Exposure Level - actual rate of radiation
Relative Humidity - ratio of water vapor pressure

Slags - the running of paint
Shot Steel - an abrasive
Synthetic Abrasive - a manufactured grit
Solvent - liquid to disolve another substance

V

Vapors - gaseous phase of matter
Voids - skips, holes in a film

W

Weld Slag - non metalic deposits formed during welding
Wet Film Thickness - thickness of liquid film after application
Wrinkling - surface defect resembling a prune
